How Cranberry Juice Conquers E. Coli

If you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection, you’ve probably heard of the home remedy of drinking cranberry juice.  Scientists are still not exactly sure how the fruit juice functions as a natural antibiotic, but a new study has provided a bit more insight.

The bacteria responsible for more than 95 percent of urinary tract infections are a pathogenic strain of E. coli.  The... se bacteria have tiny arm-like appendages called fimbriae that anchor them to the surfaces of urinary tract cells.

Live Science reports:

“... [C]ranberry juice blocks the E. coli fimbriae from grabbing onto urinary tract cells. Cranberries contain large amounts of a chemical called proanthocyanidin, or PAC. PAC functions almost like a shield -- it forces the fimbriae to crumple so they can’t attach to surface of the cells in the urinary tract.”

  • Grapefruit compound could treat diabetes, lower cholesterol and produce Atkins diet benefits without dieting

(NaturalNews) Big Pharma has been doggedly searching for drugs that target a group of nuclear receptor proteins in the human body known by the long title of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs, for short). The reason? PPARs regulate the expression of genes that are involved in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, among other functions -- so the theory is that if drugs could control P... Read more... Link

Your immune system actually begins in your gut — long before your blood or bone marrow become involved. In fact, 80 percent of your immune system lies in your ... Read more... Link

  • 1 in 7 Home Kitchens Would Flunk Inspection

A new study indicates that one out of every seven home kitchens, if not more, would flunk the health inspections given to restaurants.

Fewer than two-thirds of home kitchens would get an “A” or “B” grade on an inspection, and 14 percent or more would fail. Ninety-eight percent of U.S. restaurants receive A or B scores.

    According to USA Today:

  • Gulf Oil Dispersants Now Being Found in Seafood

A lab hired by the United Commercial Fishermen's Association analyzed coastal fishing waters. The results indicate that the U.S. government's claim that Gulf of Mexico seafood is safe to eat may be premature.

The lab found dispersant in a sample taken near Biloxi, Missouri, almost a month after BP said it had stopped using the toxic chemical to break up crude oil from the Gulf spill.

  • Why Omega-3's Work Against Diabetes

Researchers have identified the molecular mechanism that makes omega-3 fats effective in reducing chronic inflammation and insulin resistance.

The scientists identified a key receptor on macrophages found in obese body fat.  Omega-3 fats activate this macrophage receptor, resulting in anti-inflammatory effects and improved insulin sensitivity.

    Eurekalert reports:

  • US government to spend billions to help Big Pharma produce flu vaccines faster
